Former wife of late comedian passes
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help transport the remains of Saba Haile, the wife of the late comedian extraordinaire, Alebachew Teka, who died in 2005 in a car accident en route to Jimma.
“The Ethiopian community in the Metropolitan area are (sic) saddened to announce the passing of Saba Haile. Mrs. Saba passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2017 at George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC where she was receiving treatment. Mrs. Saba has no family members here in the USA. We ask everyone to support our fundraising effort to offer a proper funeral, burial, and transport her body to Ethiopia”, the statement read.
The career aid worker has been stationed in the United States, after having a career most recently with the YWCA (Young Women Christian Association), which she served as an executive director. The YWCA has confirmed she left her position suddenly and the NGO has been trying to get in touch with her to have her explain missing funds that has pushed it to suspend operation.
The new executive director of the YWCA confirmed to The Reporter that the organization was readying to release a through report of her tenure and help re- launch the organization and help raise needed funds.
Saba was educated at Nativity Catholic Girl’s School and attended Wingate Technical School. She then proceeded to go to Addis Ababa University, earning a management degree and a second degree in public administration.
Her current husband, Solomon Taye, told The Reporter how she was a “kind heartened women who cared deeply about helping others. The since re-married had five children, three were with Alebachew and two girls with Solomon.
Solomon confirmed her death and was not able to tell The Reporter of the eventual return of her body to Ethiopia. She died at the Medstar Hospital in Washington DC area.
Local media has also reported the hospital has refused to release her body, as she did not have a next to kin in the United States. A close family member was denied a visa to Washington to retrieve her body.
The GoFundMe fundraiser has managed to raise close to USD 11,000 as of press time out of its USD 15k goal.
“My condolences to her family and friends. May God give abundant grace to all who are affected by this loss”, a donor said.
